Vietnam National IPM Programme and CGFED Organize “Workshop on Potential Impacts of Pesticide Use in Agricultural Production to Health of Vietnamese Women, Food Security and Food Safety”

Hanoi, 8 May 2009

The Vietnam National IPM Programme and the local civil society organization (CSO) Center for Gender, Family and Environment in Development (CGFED) jointly organized a “Workshop on Potential Impacts of Pesticide Use in Agricultural Production to Health of Vietnamese Women, Food Security and Food Safety”. The activity held in Hanoi on 8 May 2009 was attended by a total of 60 participants representing the regional CSO Pesticide Action Network-Asia Pacific (PAN-AP), Asian Rural Institute of Japan, provincial Plant Protection sub Departments and Extension Departments, various Universities, local CSOs and representatives from mass media offices (newspaper and television). The activity was implemented by CGFED under the community monitoring project coordinated by the regional CSO Pesticide Action Network -  Asia Pacific (PANAP) and its partners. The workshop was aimed at exploring areas for collaborative work among all partners involved in the Swedish funded Pesticide Risk Reduction project in Vietnam. At the end of the workshop, participants came up with ideas on their vision for the Pesticide Risk Reduction Programme and identified strategies for achieving their vision. Participants’ vision for the PRR programme in 2020 included access to safe food, right of every farmer to be trained on sustainable and profitable agricultural production/IPM, policies supportive of pesticide risk reduction in place, and access to alternatives to chemical pesticides. Representatives from government, CSOs and private sector agreed that the key strategy to achieve their vision is for all sectors to work together in pilot areas as to complement each other’s activities and achieve more impact.
