Iran IPM Team Study Tour to Vietnam

 The Regional IPM project (GTFS/REM/070/ITA) has been working since 2004 in six countries in the Near East region to strengthen IPM training capacities using Farmer Field School approaches. In cognizance of its long IPM experience, the Iran IPM Team, comprised of seven participants, including researchers, IPM trainers, National IPM Coordinator and an NGO representative, visited the Vietnam National IPM Programme from 7-14 May 2009. The visit was aimed at learning about field level activities and programme development, including policy changes in support of IPM. The programme for the Study Tour group included meetings with policy makers and IPM implementers at various levels and visits to: (1) farmer field schools (FFS) in support of provincial safe vegetable programmes; (2) post-FFS activities such as participatory breeding activities in collaboration with the nongovernmental organization (NGO) SEARICE and large scale implementation of the system of rice intensification (SRI) by IPM FFS alumni; (3) community Pesticide Risk Reduction programmes implementing local policies in support of IPM. The Study Tour coincided with the GO-NGO Workshop on “Potential Impacts of Pesticide Use in Agricultural Production to Health of Vietnamese Women, Food Security and Food Safety and Challenges for the Pesticide Risk Reduction Programme” and the Iran Team joined the consultative meeting that was organized by the Research Center for Gender, Family and Environment for Development in cooperation with the Vietnam National IPM Programme.
