FAO Participates in Regional Symposium on High Value Vegetables in Southeast Asia: Production, Supply and Demand

 The Regional Symposium on High Value Vegetables in Southeast Asia: Production, Supply and Demand.was organized by the Thailand Department of Agriculture (DoA), Horticulture Science Society of Thailand (HSST), Vegetable Science International Network (VEGINET) and the ASEAN-AVRDC Regional Network (AARNET) in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 24-25 January 2012. A total of about 130 participants attended comprised of representatives from producer organizations, government technical line agencies, research institutions, universities and civil society organizations from 23 South and Southeast Asian countries, resource persons, AVRDC, international organizations (e.g., FAO) and donor agencies (e.g., USAID). The symposium aimed to bring together a wide range of expertise related to the vegetable sector to assess the regional vegetable production value chain and develop recommendations to improve and strengthen the region’s vegetable sector in the face of climate change. The symposium format included introductory plenary presentations and small group and plenary discussions on a range of topics under three broad themes: (1) from seed to harvest (covering germplasm conservation, breeding, seed and plant health, integrated crop and pest management/Good Agricultural Practices, pesticide risk reduction, ASEAN indigenous vegetables, low-input organic production); (2) from harvest to table  (covering postharvest technologies, Good Manufacturing Practices, cold chain management, economics and marketing, food safety, health and nutrition, supply chains); and (3) cross-sectoral issues (covering climate change, gender equity, urban and peri-urban horticulture). Field visits were carried out to ongoing varietal demonstrations of the East West Seed Company and the drying facilities of Q-Shallot specializing on the production of shallot planting materials.
The request for FAO-IPM participation was made by AVRDC based on the relevance and importance of IPM (including biological control) to production of high value vegetables in the region. The FAO Asia Regional Programme delivered a presentation, titles "FAO at Work: Case studies of vegetable IPM and farmer education in Asia". In a joint effort with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), the FAO Asia Regional Programme also co-authored a paper/presentation on "Area-wide promotion and adoption of fruit fly IPM: innovative experiences of curriculum development for Farmer Field Schools". Both presentations were well received by the Symposium audience.
