TTDI Hosts Regional Workshop on Curriculum Development for IPM-FFS and ToT on Cassava Production and Pink Mealybug Management
21-25 November, Korat, Thailand

The Regional Workshop on Curriculum Development for IPM-FFS and ToT on Cassava Production and  Pink  Mealybug Management was held from 21-25 November 2011 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. The workshop was organized by FAO, in a joint effort with the Thai Government Department of Agricultural Extension (DoAE) and the Thai Tapioca Development Institute (TTDI). The workshop was organized within the context of two regional projects (TCP/RAS/3311& GCP/RAS/253/ASB). The workshop venue was the TTDI Research and Development centre in Houaybong, an ideal site for the practical, field training oriented nature of this workshop. Some 40 extension workers, plant protection officials and resource persons from 5 Greater Mekong Subregion countries (Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam) participated. Resource persons from DoA, DoAE and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) provided technical inputs. The workshop focused on technical training for identification and management of pink cassava mealybug (Phenacoccus manihoti), an invasive pest species, responsible for 30% yield reductions in Thailand in 2009. The pink mealybug has spread in recent months to Cambodia and Lao PDR and is bound to threaten the local cassava industry if not brought under control swiftly. To this end, the workshop was also aimed at development of spread prevention awareness raising materials and training curricula for Training of Trainers and Farmers Field School with focus on cassava pink mealybug management. Biological control with the introduced parasitoid, Anagyrus lopezi, featured dominantly in capacity building efforts for Integrated Pest Management of the pink mealybug. Training of Trainers and Farmers Field Schools in the 5 GMS countries are expected to commence in December onwards, in time for the next dry season cassava planting season.
