Cambodia MAFF Minister Visits IPM Farmers, 28 December 2008
On 28 December 2008, His Excellency Dr. Chan Sarun, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (MAFF), led a delegation of officials from national and provincial levels to visit an IPM-FFS Farmers’ Association engaged in pesticide-free rice and vegetable (cauliflower, petsai, Chinese kale, and cabbage) production in Thbaung Khmum district, Kampong Cham province. Mr Sim Sithov, the District Governor informed the visitors that prior to training in IPM FFS, it was the practice of farmers in Chrok Poun village, Soung commune to mix 3-4 kinds of chemical pesticides each time the spray. The farmers’ group participated in a Farmer Field School in 1997 and since then had been practicing IPM strategies in their crop production. Among others, the farmers reported preparing and using compost pits and liquid fertilizer. For managing insect pests, farmers prepare attractant traps and baits as well as botanicals. Based on studies on behaviour of flea beetles, the farmers have designed the use of irrigation as a management strategy for the insect. The farmers are confident that the natural enemies in their fields are sufficient to control insect pest populations. This point was emphasized in the speech of Mr. Ngin Chhay, the National IPM Programme Coordinator who stressed the importance of maintaining the balance of the vegetable ecosystem by conserving natural enemies such as parasites, predators. As a result of the visit, the Minister announced the ambitious goal that at the end of year 2009, there should be at least one IPM farmers’ group producing pesticide-free rice and vegetables in each and every Cambodian province
