Nepal joined the FAO Inter-Country IPM Programme in 1988. By 2001, four ToTs (three in rice and one in vegetable) had been organized training 100 Trainers from government and various nongovernmental organizations and training a total of 14,800 farmers in 512 FFS. During the Community IPM phase of the rice project, a wide range of follow-up activities in pilot villages were implemented by FFS alumni. These included activities such as participatory planning meetings, post-FFS activities in rice disease management, rat management, golden snail management, training of Farmer Trainers, farmer field studies and technical meetings.

Upon the phase out of the FAO Community IPM Programme in 2003, bilateral funding from the Norway Embassy became available for a 4-year project, Support to the National IPM Programme in Nepal, implemented from January 2004 to December 2007. The goal of the project was to contribute to sustainable broad-based poverty alleviation and food security in Nepal while contributing to environmental protection.  Under the project, activities that were supported by FAO were expanded as well as strengthened with aspects of monitoring pesticide poisoning of farmers, developing a training curriculum for tea IPM, and working with IPM FFS alumni groups in support of agro-ecology based production. The project document for the second phase is expected to operational by October 2008.

The Plant Protection Directorate (PPD) of the Department of Agriculture (DOA), MOA (Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives) is responsible for coordinating and implementing Nepal's National IPM Programme. District IPM trainers (Government staff; plant protection officers, horticulture officers) and NGO staff manage the IPM programme at the local level, monitor and organize Farmer Field Schools (FFS) and follow-up activities for FFS graduates.
