Cambodia joined the FAO Southeast Asia Regional Vegetable IPM Programme in 1997 with core technical and financial support for farmer training from FAO and various donors such as World Bank, UNDP, DANIDA, AusAID, EU as well as other organizations like World Education and Handicap International. The Vegetable IPM Program has focused its work on major cash vegetable crops that belong to the cruciferae, solanaceae, cucurbitaceae and leguminaceae families. Lately, work in rice IPM has also been supported in response to the brown planthopper outbreak in provinces along the borders of Vietnam.

A summary of major activities and outputs for the period 1996 – April 2007 include the following:

  • Review of production and protection practices for use in curriculum development for ToT and FFS
  • Development and strengthening capacities of trainers through 3 Training of Trainers courses for government staff for 98 participants (38 women) and 3 Farmer Trainer Orientation courses for 91 participants (9 women) as well as Refresher Courses and regular planning and evaluation meetings for both government and farmer trainers
  • Farmer Field Schools for 9,145 farmers (3,638 women)
  • Support to follow up activities such as 195 action research/field experiments by farmers,  55 Farmers’ Congresses for about 2,329 farmers and the organization of Farmer Trainer Networks, IPM Clubs and Vegetable Production Associations
  • Development of Training and Ecological Guides on Cabbage and Tomato and upgrading of the Pesticide Book

The National Programme also organized two national conferences on pest and pesticide management intended to generate policy support for IPM.
